罗斯蒙特 2120 利用音叉原理设计。压电- 电子晶体使音叉以其固有振动频率(~1400 Hz) 振动。该频率的变化将受到持续监测。振动音叉传感器的频率随其所浸入的媒质而变化。液体密度越大，频率越低。
当用作低液位报警器时，储罐或管道中的液体将下降并经过音叉，导致电子装置检测到的音叉固有频率发生变化，从而把输出状态切换为干态。当 2120 开关用作高液位报警器时，储罐或管道中的液体升高，与音叉接触，因而音叉将输出状态切换为湿态。
2120 配有 “ 心跳式” LED，该 LED 指示其工作状态。当开关的输出为“OFF” 时，LED 闪烁，当输出为 “ON” 时， LED 恒亮。
